minimum wind speed for a session of snow kiting 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
hello
does someone have an idea about minimum wind speed for the naish cult 10.5 or 13.5 for a snowkite session. Already had a couple of frustrating underpowered sessions.
thank you for the help

what up dave!

for snowkiting and squeezing out the bottom end it comes down to how consistent the wind is and also the snow conditions.

pretty much as long as the wind (or breeze) is consistent and not dropping below 5-6 mph, you will be able to keep a kite in the air.

next if the snow is all icy and hard packed, you need barely any power to get moving. the more snow and powder there is, the more power you need.

ideally i would look for any wind 8-10mph+ that is fairly consistent, and both of your kites will stay flying and depending on the snow pack, get you cruising around. you will be underpowered a bit and working the kite though.

for a powered session, look for 12mph on the 13.5 and 15-16mph on the 10.5

hope this helps!

I dont know your size, but im a big guy(250 lbs) and when the wind was about 12-15km/hr i was ripping on my 12m. This is on icy conditions and with skis.
With deeper snow i would use my 16m in the same conditions and i would have a great session. In deeper i would use my snowboard.

For extreme light wind, my 16m being my main Ontario kite, 6-10km/h steady winds would get me flying on ice. So if your 13.5m is your main, i would think it would be the same. I could use my 12m in 6-8km steady on ice, but if the wind died at all it would be extremely boring.

Your smaller kite, i would guess at 15-18km on ice(again depends on your size).

Winter riding has almost no resistance. Last winter i never took out my 16m. I always used my 12m even on the light days. Just had to move it more.

Hope my rambling helps.

Krazy, lined up the mountain board from young nick, hope it works well on the sod farm next door.

Hi ol macdonald
Petey D makes a good point about snow conditions. I have salvaged a few light wind powder days days by packing down a track and building a kicker at the end of it. Just by tacking back and forth half a dozen times in the same place can speed up the snow a lot. Even a small knee high jump can make a world of difference boosting. Good luck next time out.

I find that sometimes when light wind lulls badly. it's better to be on a kite size down from your biggest kite. a smaller kite turns and flies faster, easier to build some apparent wind to get you through the bad lulls, as well relaunch's easier. downfall is that jump heights suffer.

Good luck out there! Let us know how things work out!

Nick has a great deal on that board! They are awesome on an open field. Enjoy it if you get it!
